Taking Stock tells the ‘story of the Coalcliff years’— a moment on the Illawarra coast in the early 1980s in which a group of young writers, artists & filmmakers began to gather and to launch careers they could not at the time have clearly imagined. A memoir, and in part an autobiography, it is told via recall of the many people and places in Brereton’s life yet — while the purposes and methods are autobiographical — Taking Stock produces a strong and detailed focus, moving regularly from memories to a critique of memory. The flexible, alert, interrogative effect — always attendant to particulars and nuance — is a long-standing trait in Sal Brereton’s writing. | ||
